Their story
Fairy Tale Cotton Candy is a family-owned business in the Des Moines area run by Steve and Meg Shearer. In 2002 the Shearers bought Chocolate Storybook, a long-standing Des Moines candy shop, and built their cotton candy line from there.
Over time the business moved from retail into manufacturing. With help from Iowa's Center for Industrial Research and Service, the team added food safety certifications, took on caramel production after a supplier closed, and opened a new production space.
Today the company employs more than 30 people and sells to small shops, large retailers and private-label partners, as well as online.
How it's made
The team produces more than 50 flavors of cotton candy in its own Iowa facility, packing it for retail shelves and private-label customers. The company has also added caramel making to its production line.
