Their story
Four Barrel Coffee opened in 2008 in San Francisco's Mission District, on Valencia Street. Along with Ritual and Blue Bottle, it was part of the group of independent local roasters that put the city on the specialty coffee map, roasting its own beans, selling wholesale and running its own cafes.
The company was started by Jeremy Tooker, who had earlier helped found Ritual. He left the business in 2018 after a lawsuit by former employees, which was settled out of court, and gave up his shares. Four Barrel has since been run by co-owners Tal Mor and Jodi Geren, who also opened the Hayes Valley bakery and wine bar Loquat in 2021.
How it's made
Four Barrel roasts its own coffee in San Francisco and supplies cafes and restaurants as well as its own shops. The Valencia Street cafe is known for skipping Wi-Fi and laptop outlets, keeping the focus on the coffee and the room.
Why we carry them
Four Barrel is part of the backstory of coffee in this city. Their beans are a good pick if you want a local roast for the home grinder.
