Their story
Carl T. Hammond Sr. apprenticed as a candy maker in Denver before opening Hammond's Candy Company in 1920. The business stayed in the family for decades, passing to his son Tom in 1966 and then to Tom's son-in-law, Emery Dorsey IV, in 1985.
In 1999 the family sold the company to a group of candy industry veterans, and Andrew Schuman has led it since 2007. Hammond's moved to a larger plant north of downtown Denver in 2004, where visitors can watch the work, and it has since folded in McCraw's taffy and the Old Dominion Peanut Company's brittle recipes.
How it's made
Hammond's avoids heavy automation and still uses many of its original recipes and some machinery dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Candy canes, ribbon candy and lollipops are cooked, pulled and shaped by hand at the Denver plant.
Why we carry them
We love Hammond's for candy that still looks handmade, because it is. The ribbon candy and striped canes make easy gifts, especially around the holidays.
