Their story

John Harney spent decades in the hotel business, including years running the White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut, where he learned tea blending from British blender Stanley Mason. In 1983, at age 53, he started Harney & Sons in his basement with six teas.

His sons joined over time, Mike in 1988 and Paul in 1996, and the business moved to a larger home in Millerton, New York, in the early 2000s, where it runs a factory, shop and cafe. John Harney died in 2014, and the family still runs the company, which now offers hundreds of teas.

How it's made

The Harney family sources teas from growing regions around the world and blends them in Millerton. The range includes loose-leaf teas, herbal blends, and teas packed in silken sachets and standard bags, with organic and kosher options.

From the beginning, my dad's mission was to make tea an everyday luxury.
Mike Harney, son of founder, on the Harney & Sons blog (2026)

Why we carry them

We like Harney & Sons for its deep, reliable range, from simple breakfast blends to rare single-estate teas. The tins make good gifts, too.
