Their story
JOYA began in New York in the mid-2000s, started by Frederick Bouchardy, a Yale graduate who stays on as creative director. From the start the brand mixed natural materials and unusual fragrance blends with careful package design.
Its flagship studio in Brooklyn works as part perfume workshop, part ceramics factory and part event space, with an open warehouse feel where visitors can see the work happening around them.
Bouchardy has long collaborated with local designers and friends, and the early collections were designed in-house with design partner Julia Kots.
How it's made
JOYA blends its own fragrances and produces ceramics in its Brooklyn studio. The focus is on natural materials and scent combinations that feel a little unexpected, presented in vessels designed to stay on the shelf after the candle is gone.
