Their story
Maeve is the new name for Seattle Chocolate, a company that started in 1991 with backing from a group of angel investors. Jean Thompson was one of them. After the 2001 Nisqually earthquake wrecked the original facility and the other investors walked away, she stepped in and has run the company ever since from a factory in south Seattle.
In 2025 Jean and her daughter Ellie, the brand manager, renamed the company Maeve after a warrior queen from Irish legend, with bright illustrated wrappers and the goal of reaching chocolate lovers well beyond Seattle.
The truffle bars with soft meltaway centers that made the company's name are still at the heart of the line.
How it's made
The company buys cocoa directly from farmers in Ghana, Peru, Tanzania and the Dominican Republic, and uses Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa where direct buying isn't possible. It gives 10 percent of net profits to farming communities for projects like wells, savings programs and seedlings. The chocolate is made at its own facility in south Seattle.
I learned the hard way that growing at all costs was basically going to be the demise of my company.
Why we carry them
We reach for Maeve when we want a bar that feels like a treat without being fussy. The meltaway centers are the draw, and the sourcing story backs it up.
