Their story
Patti Furey Crane began baking gluten-free in 2004, after a health diagnosis led her to rethink what she ate. Laid off and at home with an infant daughter, she had been perfecting a brownie recipe when her husband suggested she turn it into a business.
Mariposa started as a wholesale operation in a shared kitchen in Berkeley, delivering to local markets and natural food stores. Customers with celiac disease and others avoiding gluten found it quickly. The bakery later moved to Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, where it opened a public counter, and by 2009 it also had a spot at the San Francisco Ferry Building.
Over the years Crane has let customers steer the menu, adding bread and pizza crust she never planned to make.
How it's made
Every item is made in a dedicated gluten-free bakery, and some are also free of dairy, nuts, sesame or eggs. Recipes lean on blends such as rice flours, potato starch and gluten-free oats, and the menu follows the seasons, from stone fruit galettes in summer to apple pastries in fall.
Why we carry them
We trust Mariposa when a guest can't eat gluten and still wants something that tastes like real baking. It's a local favorite for good reason.
