Peychaud's
The New Orleans bitters at the heart of the Sazerac cocktail.
- Founded by
- Antoine Amedée Peychaud
- Based in
- New Orleans, Louisiana
Their story
Peychaud's Bitters date to the 1830s, when Antoine Amedée Peychaud ran an apothecary in New Orleans' French Quarter and created his own aromatic bitters. By 1857 his bitter cordial was advertised as being used at the Sazerac House, part of the story of the Sazerac cocktail.
Today the brand belongs to the Sazerac Company. Most bottles are made at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky, and since 2019 a portion has been produced and bottled back in New Orleans at the Sazerac House.
How it's made
Peychaud's is made from a blend of botanicals and spices, giving it a bright red color and a lighter, anise-tinged profile. Production takes place at Buffalo Trace in Kentucky, with small runs made and bottled on site at the Sazerac House in New Orleans.
Why we carry them
We think every home bar needs a bottle of Peychaud's. A few dashes are what make a Sazerac taste like New Orleans.
