Their story

Barbadillo's story starts with two cousins, Benigno Barbadillo y Hortiüela and Manuel López Barbadillo, who came to Sanlúcar de Barrameda from Mexico and bought their first cellar, El Toro, in 1821. Sanlúcar sits where the Guadalquivir meets the Atlantic, and its damp sea air shapes the town's signature wine, manzanilla.

The family has run the house for generations. In 1827 it released Pastora, described as the first bottled manzanilla, and in 1975 Antonio Barbadillo Romero created Castillo de San Diego, a white table wine that became a Spanish staple. Today the group also includes wineries in Somontano and Castilla y León, and its Solear manzanilla made Wine Spectator's Top 100 list in 2015.

How it's made

Barbadillo's sherries age in the family's cellars in Sanlúcar, where the coastal humidity suits the slow aging these wines need. The range runs from fresh manzanilla to old amontillados, including Versos 1891, bottled from a single cask after more than a century of aging. Since 2020 the house has also made organic wines under its Sábalo label.

Why we carry them

We think a chilled glass of Solear is one of the best ways into sherry. It is dry, salty and bright, and it loves olives, almonds and fried seafood.
